You know what protects me from germs, viruses and those gloomy winter slumps? Not my outrageous good looks (though they help). My immune system. And contrary to what some adverts try to sell you, boosting it takes no magic potion and no premium subscription: it all plays out in the food bowl, on the sofa and in the way you look after me. Here’s the full programme.
The foundations: without them, nothing works
1. A diet rich in animal protein
My antibodies are built from protein. A quality, meat-rich diet is THE number one preventive medicine. It’s all spelled out in my natural cat food guide and my organic kibble comparison.
2. Good hydration
Kidneys that filter properly and moist mucous membranes are the first barrier against infection. My 10 tips are in the guide on how to get your cat to drink.
3. A happy gut
70% of my immunity is built in my gut. An unbalanced flora means defences in freefall. That’s exactly why probiotics for cats matter so much.
4. Stress under control
Cortisol (the stress hormone) is a professional immunity saboteur. A cat that’s stressed around the clock gets sick more often: cystitis, recurring cat flu, dermatitis. So my complete anti-stress guide is also… an immunity guide in disguise.
The natural helpers that have proven their worth
Brewer’s yeast
B vitamins, zinc, selenium: brewer’s yeast for cats – Amazon supports the defences AND makes the coat spectacular. A pinch a day in the wet food, a one-month course at the change of season.
Omega-3s
The EPA and DHA in fish oil – Amazon calm chronic inflammation, which frees up my immune system for the real battles.
Spirulina
A micro-algae packed with antioxidants and iron. A powdered spirulina for pets – Amazon, at a feline dose (a pinch), as a 3 to 4 week course.
Homemade bone broth
Collagen, glycine, minerals: simmered for 12 hours, with no salt, onion or garlic, it’s my favourite winter elixir. The recipe is in my article on homemade cat food.
The smart calendar
- Autumn: a brewer’s yeast course plus a review of the diet before winter
- Winter: bone broth, sleep in the warm, daily play to make up for the drop in activity
- Spring: a post-winter probiotics course plus intensive shedding-season brushing (see my grooming guide)
- All year round: vaccines up to date and regular worming, because a squatting parasite is wasted immunity (my worming guide)
The warning signs you should watch for
Repeated cat flu, abscesses that linger, a dull coat that won’t shift, unusual tiredness, pale or inflamed gums: an immune system that’s failing shows itself. This is no longer a prevention matter, it’s time for a vet check (FIV/FeLV in particular for outdoor cats).
In short
Immunity isn’t bought in miracle capsules: it’s built every day with quality protein, water, a healthy gut, sleep and little stress. Supplements (brewer’s yeast, omega-3s, spirulina, probiotics) are the cherry, not the cake.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I boost a cat's immunity?
A protein-rich diet, good hydration, a balanced gut flora, sleep, daily play and low stress. Supplements come on top.
Which supplements boost a cat's defences?
Brewer's yeast, omega-3, spirulina and probiotics support immunity, as seasonal courses and at a feline dose.
Why does my cat get ill often?
Chronic stress, a poor diet, parasites or age weaken immunity. A recurring cat flu warrants a veterinary check-up.
